Alto recorder after I. Denner
The original of this alto can be found in the Kopenhagen Museum of Musical History, and is, to my knowledge the best kept example, made by Jacob Denner. He was the son of the famous Johann Christoph Denner (1655-1707), the founder of the well-known instrument makers family from Nuremberg, which became very famous through the invention of the clarinet. Jacob Denner lived from 1681 to 1735 and made this instrument probably around 1720. Not only was he a very good maker, with a lot of feeling for precision and detail - his instruments are always perfectly finished - but he also was known to a certain extent as a player of the instruments he made. The recorder has a fast and very precise speech, and is very clear and brillant, specially in the high register, without ever being sharp or edgy. The full warm, tone of the middle and lower registers makes it into a well-balanced instrument, with plenty of possibilities for differentiation in tonal colours. The copy that I make is tuned to a' = 415' Hertz with single or double bored tone holes at wish, historical or modern fingering. This recorder also makes a fine ‘double' instrument with a second corps de rechange at 440 Hertz.Image
