classical 1 keyed flute after C. Palanca
Carlo Palanca has made many instruments during his long life (he died at the age of 95 !). The original of this instrument was made in the second half of the 18th century in Italy from ebony with ivory rings and a silver key and is now in Vicenza, Italy. Another instrument from his very capable hands, now in the Gemeentemuseum in the Hague, Holland, has been made entirely from ivory, and has a very nicely engraved silver key. This instrument reaches to a great perfection. The flute is clear and pure in all registers, and has a nice powerful tone. In larger ensembles, the flutist will have less effort to be heard clearly, which is not at all obvious with other baroque flutes. It has a quite big embouchure, yet a clear and stable tone, speaks easily in all registers. Needless to say that my copy follows that original flute in every aspect of it, and I have made no adjustments at all to the original design. The basic pitch is a' = 415 Hertz. Extra corps de rechange can be made in order to produce a' = 430 or even 440 Hertz. A foot register and corkscrew is recommendable in such a case; the instrument is at its very best in only 415. Image
