classical 6 keyed flute after R. Potter
This 6 keyed traverso came out of the workshop of the very productive London flutemaker Richard Potter. It is now in the Bate Collection in Oxford and last time I saw and played it in 1988, it was still in a good condition. The flute made from boxwood and ivory, with silver keys, has a good sound. There are three corps de rechange, each one with two silver keys (Bb and G#). Apart from the usual D# key the flute has a right-hand F-key. The foot is lengthened down to C, and has two simple keys for C and C#. The center joints with the numbers 4, 5 and 6 are tuned to respectively 418, 427 and 436 Hertz. The head joint with its oval embouchure has a corkscrew with three marked positions. It is a flexible flute with many possibilities, although the low C could be a little stronger. For my copy I have only changed the foot, to allow the lower register a little more ‘room'. The pitch has been raised slightly. The traverso is delivered with 1 center joint for a' = 415, a' = 430 or a' =440 Hertz at wish. An extra corps de rechange can always be ordered in one of the available pitches, at extra cost. The flute can be stained or left unstained Image
