classical 6 keyed flute after R. Potter
| classical 6 keyed flute after R. Potter |
This 6 keyed traverso came out of the workshop of the very productive London flutemaker Richard Potter. It is now in the Bate Collection in Oxford and last time I saw and played it in 1988, it was still in a good condition. The flute made from boxwood and ivory, with silver keys, has a good sound. There are three corps de rechange, each one with two silver keys (Bb and G#). Apart from the usual D# key the flute has a right-hand F-key. The foot is lengthened down to C, and has two simple keys for C and C#. The center joints with the numbers 4, 5 and 6 are tuned to respectively 418, 427 and 436 Hertz. The head joint with its oval embouchure has a corkscrew with three marked positions. It is a flexible flute with many possibilities, although the low C could be a little stronger. For my copy I have only changed the foot, to allow the lower register a little more room'. The pitch has been raised slightly. The traverso is delivered with 1 center joint for a' = 415, a' = 430 or a' =440 Hertz at wish. An extra corps de rechange can always be ordered in one of the available pitches, at extra cost. The flute can be stained or left unstained |
