descant recorder after Th. Stanesby jr. decorated
The wonderfully carved ivory recorder from the Brüggen collection has served as example. The original is tuned to a pitch of 422 Hertz. I have brought the pitch for this "copy" down to a more useful a' = 415 Hertz. On special request I can also make an exact replica in 422 Hertz. The tone of this little instrument is very beautiful; it has a very bright, warm tone, which has also been described as "a sunny reediness". For the decorated version special delivery terms apply, because of the extra work involved. Besides an instrument from European boxwood, I also make one in imitation ivory and one in fossil mammoth ivory. Imitation ivory is a polyester resin-based substitute(AC849/TM) and a good alternative. The difference with real ivory is only visible to the trained eye. It is however, lighter in weight, and different in structure, which gives a slightly different tone than the original. The best result is achieved with fossil mammoth ivory. It can have different colors and qualities, depending on the age, and where it was found. It is very heavy, dense and hard, and the best replacement for elephant ivory (for this beautiful animal's sake we don't work with elephant ivory !) The price of this recorder varies depending on the quality and color of the mammoth ivory. Please contact us for more information. Image
