descant recorder after J. Steenbergen |
One of the students of Richard Haka, (the founder of the Dutch school of woodwind instrument making) is Jan Steenbergen. This soprano recorder was kept in the collection of F. Brüggen. Steenbergen's soprano recorder has clearly a much louder tone than the instrument of his teacher Haka. This recorder distinguishes itself also by an unusually fast and direct speech and a clear tone, rich in harmonics throughout the entire register. The flexibility of the tone and the stability in pitch are always good, even with increased breath pressure. The instrument consists of two parts, and is tuned to a' = 415 Hertz, with double bored toneholes, and modern English fingering. A high pitched version in a' = 440 Hertz is also possible, as is a DOUBLE version; a' = 415 with an extra joint for a' = 440. In both cases the bores have been dramatically changed and reduced. At a small extra cost it is also possible to make a three part instrument. |
